How do you get permission to play multiplayer on Xbox 360 on Xbox Live if you have a silver membership?

I wanted to play Halo 3 and a great deal of other games with people around the world because it would be really fun and it would improve my gaming.The problem that occurs is that whenever I try to play multiplayer, it says that you do not have permission to play multipalyer on Live

    you have to have xbox live gold to play against the world its £40 for a years membership you can get it from all game shops. silver only lets you message friends

    You gotta upgrade to the Gold membership, but that is going to cost you a small annual fee. It is worth.
