How long do I have to wait to put my goldfish in the tank after I filled it with tap water & conditioner? HELP?

My kids just won a goldfish at the fair. I bought a small tank today and filled it with tap water, and put the conditioner in. Now how long should I wait before putting the goldfish in? Because right now he is in a small bowl and not eating or swimming. So I would like to get him in the tank as asap. Thanks. HELP!!

Water conditioner works pretty much instantly. Make sure the tank temperature is the same as the temperature of the water that he’s in now. FYI, goldfish are extremely dirty and normally need larger tanks to survive (for a tiny one you need a minimum of 10 gallons, but keep in mind that he’ll outgrow that pretty quickly).
The reason he’s not eating is probably because the ammonia in the bowl is extremely high and it’s making him sick. Unfortunately, if your tank is too small, the ammonia will spike in that as well and the tank will take an extremely long time to cycle (build up natural beneficial bacteria) because the waste-load will be too much.

Well since your tank isnt cycled, it can be a bit of a problem with ammonia and chorine levels. But a fish needs 2 gallons per inch of fish to be healthy, so Id recommend putting him in the tank you filled with water. Because otherwise, hes living in even more toxic water. You will have issues with the levels in your tank, and possible with him, but goldfish are hearty and can survive so much. I lost a goldfish and almost lost another before I really learned about fish. I had to basically bring my fish back from the dead…lol. Poor little guy.

conditioner works immediatly. (Be sure when you do water changes, to put the conditioner in the water BEFORE adding it to the tank.
Put him in right away if the water is room temp or at least the same as the tank he’s in now.. He needs the bigger space. (common goldfish like those at fairs need the MOST room. 15-20+ gallons per fish)
Then the tank will cycle. Please read up on this page and follow their instructions.
